Pooh (Giant Board Book)
Published in Board book by Dutton Books (June, 1999)
Authors: Ernest H. Shepard, A. A. Winnie-The-Pooh Milne, and Sheen
Average review score:

Well done but a little short on text
This book is pictorially a success. I loved it and I'm too old to be a kid any more. I would like the editor to focus on better syntax in the English though; I really had to augment the text with more of my own comments for my daughter because what text is there is quite terse (short). I wonder if Warren Harding wrote the text???

A Honey of a Book
This is a wonderful book! My 19 month old son loves hearing this book over and over again. He can point to the pictures and name the characters. He is familiar with this story because is is part of one of Pooh's adventure videos. This pictures are wonderful to look at and remind me of the 'old fashioned Pooh'. The words are very large and make it easy for a child to follow and point to while 'reading' the story. Definitely a family favorite.

Pooh Helps Out (My Very First Winnie the Pooh)
Published in Hardcover by Disney Press (September, 1999)
Authors: Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld, Robbin Cuddy, Mary Hogan, and A. A. Winnie-The-Pooh Milne
Average review score:

What I thought about the book "Pooh helps out"
I think that "Pooh helps out" was a very good book. I teaches children to help each other out. I liked how all the characters helped each other out and then they all helped out to have a wonderful supper after all the helping they did. It also teaches that if you have something to do you won't get so bored.

Pooh Lovers
If you love Winnie the Pooh, you will adore this entertaining adaptation. Armstrong has kept the charm of the characters as she masterfully tells the story to appeal to preschool through beginning readers and their parents. As an early reader, this concept was well thought out and will provide quick feelings of accomplishment. The activities in the back of the book add the needed repetition to insure that the sight words are remembered. And all of this learning comes from a fun, well paced story that people young and old love.

Poppy Bear: The Garden That Overslept
Published in Hardcover by Beyond Words Publising (09 April, 2001)
Authors: Ruth E. Saltzman and Catherine Deeter
Average review score:

Beautiful illustrations and wonderful story
We received Poppy Bear as a 3rd birthday gift for our son. We have all enjoyed it immensely. We have our own beautiful garden that we inherited from the previous owners of our home. Our son has grown up always having the garden to play in so he took to this book immediately.

I really liked the "Wizard of Oz"-like approach where the book started off in black and white drawings and gradually transformed into colorful, beautiful (and amazingly accurate) depictions of a garden coming to back to life in the Springtime.

The illustrations are first rate and the use of gold inks on some of the pages literally makes the pages shimmer.

You and your children can enjoy this book on a number of levels. It works well as a read-along book, since the pages are so beautiful and bold, but children will also be interested in the story as they grow older.

Poppy Bear: The Garden that Overslept
There is a sweetness to this book that will appeal to all ages. It's a beautiful story that is enhanced by the fact that it is written in a well flowing prose. The illustrations in this book start with detailed black and white drawings, and develop into a rich, boldly colorful visual feast. Poppy Bear is an endearing character who opens children's eyes to the beauty and colors of nature.

The Ring Bear
Published in Hardcover by Dageforde Publishing, Inc. (January, 2003)
Authors: N. L. Sharp and Michael T. Hassler
Average review score:

Ring Bear a must buy!
This is a delightful, thoughtful creation. The author has masterfully pieced together an idea that has come up in the minds of so many youngsters--the misinterpretation of ring bearer as ring bear. This is not only a superb gift for any ring bearer, but it is also a great buy for all children. It is extremely humorous, yet so realistic. A must have!

Whimsically told story artfully supplemented
The Ring Bear by N. L. Sharp is the story of Robert, a young boy who loves bears - real bears and stuffed bears, bears in books and even bear crackers to munch! So when Robert learns that he is to be a "ring bear" in his aunt's wedding he is excited - until he learns that his aunt isn't expecting a real bear! A whimsically told story artfully supplemented with amusing color illustrations by Michael T. Hassler, Jr., The Ring Bear is a welcome and highly recommended addition to school and community library picture book collections for young readers.

Rolling Along With Goldilocks and the Three Bears
Published in Hardcover by Woodbine House (June, 1999)
Authors: Cindy Meyers and Carol Morgan
Average review score:

It's a great Book!
This a familiar story for children with a special twist. Baby bear is in a wheelchair. The story talks about his special equipment and his therapy but still tells the basic story familiar to the children. The pictures are delightful and the words are 'just right'. It is an excellent addition to our Head Start library.

good book using familar story to teach about disability
As an RN I feel this book is useful in using an established storyline to introduce children to others who have a disability. Children who read this already know and can relate to the story, and therefore can use this information to better understand a friend or family member who may be confined to a wheelchair.

Authors: Martin Waddell and Virginia Austin
Average review score:

a lovely story with charming illustrations
This is a delightful story for reading aloud or for a beginning reader. My daughter has read it countless times, and loves the fact that it is such a small book that she can put it in her pocket and take it wherever she goes. She delights in examining the pictures for every little detail. We love Martin Waddell and enjoy all his books.

Truly a remarkable book that my children cherish.
This book is a true masterpiece, delightful in every respect as are all of Virginia Austins childrens books. Not only are the illustrations exceptional but the story is complete and the lessons are easily understood and digested by young minds.

Sam's Worries
Published in Hardcover by Hyperion Press (September, 1991)
Authors: Maryann MacDonald and Judith Riches
Average review score:

Witty Story, Wonderful Watercolors
This is one of my favorite children's books. It treats Sam's worries, typical of other children's worries (lost library books, monster under bed, stolen cookies, vampires, etc.) in a funny but understanding manner. And the illustrations of Sam and his companion in worry--his teddy bear--are simply precious.

Buy it now before it goes out of print.

One of my all-time favorite picture books.
This is an excellent picture book -- for both kids and adults. It has gorgeous illustrations and beautiful, emotionally meaningful writing. If your child or you are worried about something, read this book for some quick comfort.

Samantha & the Bear
Published in Paperback by Neighborhood Press (01 November, 1999)
Author: J.J. Green
Average review score:

Excellent and Powerful
I read this book at the recommendation of a friend. When I was done I just had to read it again. Green has the ability to suck the reader into the story and hold him there, not allowing them to figure out what's next, but anxious to see. Hopefully this will just be the first book an a long line with these characters.

The best book in this genre that I've read in a long time
Wow. What a mind bending adventure. The story is fast paced, mesmerizing, and full of surprises. Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down.

I absolutely loved the way myth and ancient symbols of the struggle between man and woman were woven into the story. The writer is a superb story teller.

This is the first time I got so excited about a book that I actually took the time to write a review about it.

Sand Cake
Published in Paperback by Price Stern Sloan Pub (June, 1990)
Author: Frank Asch
Average review score:

My Favorite
Nice description by the other reviewer. I will just add that Sand Cake is not just my favorite children's book -- I'm 53 years old -- but my favorite book, period! (My second-favorite is Sweet Thursday, the sequel to Steinbeck's Cannery Row.) Sand Cake is a short sonata in words and pictures.

A witty story for kids - and grown-ups too!
This excellent story had even me (the mum) guessing how Baby Bear and Papa Bear were going to make a cake (with milk, flour and eggs) at the beach! Mr Asch has really written a wonderful story that's full of warmth, imagination and originality. My two year old insists that I read it to her at least three times every night. She also loves looking out for little details in the pictures. A month has gone by and she is still excited by it!

Sarah Lynn's Christmas Present
Published in Hardcover by Waiver Publishing (01 September, 2002)
Author: John Henson
Average review score:

A truly lovely and entertaining holiday picture book story
Written and illustrated by John Henson, Sarah Lynn's Christmas Present is a thoroughly enjoyable Christmas season picture book, enhanced with appealing cartoon-like figures drawn in full color. Sarah Lynn is a young girl who wants a doll for Christmas -- so when she sees her mother come home with bags full of unappealing stuffed bears, she fears the worst for her Christmas present! Sarah Lynn's Christmas Present is highly recommended as being a truly lovely and entertaining holiday picture book story about learning not to make snap judgments and automatic assumptions.

My kids loved this book
I bought this book for my kids and they absolutely love it. Since having it, they have fought over who gets to read from it and draw the pictures first after school! I found the book to be very witty and exeptionally funny. The fact that Sara Lynn NOT ONLY dreams in color, but in CRAYON was a brilliant touch! My oldest still prefers THE GRINCH, but Sarah Lynn's Christmas Present has great company on the shelf with the rest of our Christmas classics. We hope to see more of Sarah Lynn very soon!OH! We have one suggestion: that her brothers name be Matty!
